The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
